Do you guys have any recommendations on what software to get to create my own mesh's?

I have an unregistered copy of MeshX but it seems a little clumsy to use, I have found these by Autodesk, but don't know if either of them will export to a .x file.

Free trial version, full version is like 30$.

Completely free, somewhat similar to 3dsmax.  The exports seem a bit iffy though.

Blender exporting is far orse than iffy. My roommate and I are going to be working on a custom model format that we can use for the HMEngine with the new ability to write the content importers on top of XNA and all. This will be a plugin to Blender and will probably be part of another tutorial down the road.

That sounds good.  I liked blender other than the fact that all the exporters are crap.  There's also a personal learning edition of Maya.  I haven't used it so I don't know if there are any limitations, but it says it has all the features of version 7.0 for non-commercial learning use.

ericc59,

Yes I have just installed that and found that I couldn't export to .x, so have removed it now.

I will give blender a go as it is free and see how I get on with it. If the exports suck as you say then I cant wait for Mikes plug in Smiley

Independent of that for which 3D programm you decide (3d studio max, gmax, maya, cinema4d, lightwave, milkshape, blender, xsi) there are many 3d party exporters for the x file (and fbx also) format available, shure not all of them are free.

I prefer 3DS Max and use the x file exporter from the DirectX SDK and the results are quit ok for me.

I personally love blender and lightwave, just because I can run them on my SGI O2, another passion of mine I love Irix.

But 3dsMax and Cinema4D are the easiest to learn though.

Don't know about the export functions of cinema though, I only use that for cutscene renders.

Here is my dilemma,

I have a game in mind, but I need to create my own mesh's, I have tried MeshX, Blender and Milkshape, and I find them quite unusable, and so, I don't want to go spending money on them (I know blender is free, but I find it too clumsy, or maybe I am).

All I want to do is create the simplest of objects, nothing fancy at all, maybe three or four basic shapes to make the model. Is there nothing out there that is simple to use and most importantly free that will export to a .x file without any issues???

3DsMax is like $3000! Maya is an even more ridiculous price!

Ive recently tried out MilkShape and Blender.  Blender seemed like a far more mature product, with a huge community that has delivered a lot of quality demos and tutorials.  I didn't find that with Milkshape.  I also found that Milkshape's .x exporter seemed to "just work", while Blender's (recently downloaded 2.42a) was crap.  I did, however, download several other .x exporters and have since found a few that work okay.  At this point I am uncertain if the problems I am having are the exporter or my ability with Blender.

I am definitely trying to develop a content workflow where my friends and I can go from art production and into game.  So that's why I am researching this at the moment.

Blenders exporter just sux, for me at the very least, all I did was create 3 basic objects, altered there dimensions a little and then ran the export, I got the three object in the mesh, but not as I had placed them....

I am finding this part the most frustrating really, all I want to do is build some really simple objects. I just think it could well kill the homebrew community if it is this difficult to get a reasonable 3D modeling tool that will reliably generate .x files, naturally it wont we  will soldier on come what may.....Smiley

The nice part about blender is that its open source so if the exporter is a bit iffy you could check its source, also maybe the exporter used a different coordinate set then you used in your scene.

I recently moved over the SoftImage XSI Foundation... full on, professional grade 3D package for $500. Not too bad (considering alternatives). I've had good luck with both the .x exporter and the FBX exporters. Also... I do a lot of modeling in Silo. $100 bucks... great modeler, very intuitive. But you would need to export it as a .obj file and pull it into something like Blender or Milkshape for texturing/animating.

That all sounds great, but I would prefer to spend nothing Smiley so I guess blender is going to be my only option...

I will have to figure out why my exports are so hit and miss.

Try out GMAX ( http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax ), it's also free and offers all basic functions of 3DS Max.
