Shader tutorials

Hello all.

I'm in the middel of implementing the third XNA-Enigne tutorial in XNA 1.0 and must admit that I don't know what I'm doing.
Although Mike writes good tutorials I don't get all the shader stuff. Can someone recommend any tutorials or books that discuss this a bit more in detail? And in a way that a complete newbie on shaders can understand.

The ShaderX series, and Game Programming Gems series. They do cost a bit each, but they are a real wealth of information. I got myself ShaderX and ShaderX2, and even though they are outdated a bit, they still have some great techniques in there, like soft-shadows etc.
You can also check out the "Hardcore" section on gamedev.net, which has some good things, just convert from C++ to C#(XNA).
